In pursuit of Excellence in the Geosciences

The CGS will be showcasing, by means of a mini conference on 4–5 February 2016, the research and technical work that is currently being undertaken by its researchers. Although the CGS is mandated to cover the themes of Geoscience Mapping, Mineral Resources and Energy, Engineering and Geohazards and Environment and Water, the conference will focus mainly on the five national earth science projects awarded to it under Government’s Medium Term Expenditure Framework. These focus areas entail the projects on Shale Gas, Derelict and Ownerless Mines, Mine Water Management, Promotion of Investment in Exploration and Mining, and Seismic Microzonation of Johannesburg  and the KOSH area.

The conference, to be held at the International Convention Centre of the CSIR (Pretoria), includes some 30 oral and 25 poster presentations, exhibits of new maps produced for Namibia by the CGS and information on the achievements of the CGS Mapping School. The conference will also feature four keynote presenters; two on the topic of shale gas, one on mine water management and one on the future of mechanised mining in South Africa.

Unfortunately, the programme is jam-packed and no more presentations can be accepted. However, anybody is still welcome to attend.

More information is available at www.geoscience.org.za/conference especially regarding registration and background on the keynote presenters. The NEPAD SANBio Network was reconfigured in response to the 4 Pillars and 6 Priority Areas of the Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA-2024 - a 10-year strategy which is part of the long-term African Union Agenda 2063). STISA-2024 envisages the accelerated transition of largely commodity-based African economies to innovation-led, knowledge-based economies.
